Big Almaty Lake is a natural alpine reservoir at 2,511 meters in the Ile-Alatau range. The lake changes color throughout the seasons — from deep blue-green in summer to icy turquoise when surrounded by snow.

The lake is remarkably accessible, located just 15 km south of Almaty. On clear days, the reflection of the surrounding 4,000-meter peaks is mesmerizing.

Above the lake sits the Tian Shan Astronomical Observatory for stargazing.
