The Kazakh Altai in the far east of the country is one of the most remote and breathtakingly beautiful regions in all of Central Asia. At the crossroads of the Siberian taiga, Mongolian steppe, and Central Asian desert, this region boasts an extraordinary diversity of landscapes — from snow-capped peaks and dense coniferous forests to alpine meadows carpeted with wildflowers and pristine mountain lakes.

Lake Markakol, situated at 1,447 metres, is the centrepiece of the Markakol Nature Reserve and one of the most beautiful lakes in Kazakhstan. Surrounded by steep forested cliffs and meadows, the lake and its reserve harbour approximately 900 plant species, 255 bird species, and 58 mammal species including the endangered snow leopard, golden eagle, and black stork. The massive Bukhtarma Reservoir at the foot of the mountains offers boating and fishing.

The region remains largely untouched by mass tourism, making it ideal for adventurous European travellers seeking genuine wilderness. The Old Austrian Road, a scenic mountain highway built by WWI prisoners of war, offers one of the most spectacular drives in Kazakhstan. However, some areas near the Chinese and Russian borders require special permits, and infrastructure is basic outside the main towns.

Highlights

  • Lake Markakol and its nature reserve
  • Bukhtarma Reservoir — boating and fishing
  • Old Austrian Road scenic drive
  • Snow leopard habitat and birdwatching
  • Berel burial mounds (Scythian archaeology)
  • Views of Mount Belukha (4,506 m, highest in Siberian Altai)

Travel Tips

Fly to Ust-Kamenogorsk (Oskemen) from Almaty or Astana. Border permits required for Markakol, Berel, and some other areas — arrange in advance through a local tour operator. Roads can be rough — 4WD essential. Accommodation is limited to basic guesthouses and homestays. Bring insect repellent. A local guide is highly recommended.
