Almaty Food & Bazaar Trail

Almaty is the gastronomic capital of Kazakhstan, where traditional Kazakh flavours meet influences from across Central Asia, Russia, Korea, and the wider world. The city's legendary Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazaar) is a feast for the senses — mountains of dried fruits and nuts, towers of spices, fresh bread from tandoor ovens, displays of horse meat sausages, and stalls selling kumis and shubat. Walking through the bazaar is one of the quintessential Almaty experiences.

Beyond the bazaar, Almaty's food scene has exploded in recent years. Traditional Kazakh restaurants serve beshbarmak and other classics in beautifully decorated settings, while a new generation of chefs is reinventing Central Asian cuisine with modern techniques. The city also has thriving Uyghur, Dungan (Chinese Muslim), Korean, and Georgian dining scenes, reflecting Kazakhstan's multiethnic character. Laghman (hand-pulled noodle soup) and manti (steamed dumplings) are especially popular.

Food tours are available that combine bazaar visits, street food sampling, traditional restaurant meals, and even cooking classes where visitors can learn to make manti, baursaks, or plov (Central Asian pilaf).
