Ile-Alatau National Park stretches along the northern slopes of the Trans-Ili Alatau range directly behind Almaty, making it one of the most accessible mountain wilderness areas of any major city in the world. Established in 1996, the park covers nearly 200,000 hectares and ranges from the foothills at 600 metres to glaciated peaks above 4,500 metres, offering an extraordinary variety of landscapes within a short drive from the city centre.
The park encompasses many of the Almaty region's most popular destinations: Big Almaty Lake, the Turgen waterfalls, the Butakovka and Kim-Asar gorges for day hikes, and the trails leading to alpine meadows and mountain passes. The Tuyuk-Su glacier is an important site for climate research and is accessible to experienced hikers. Spruce and juniper forests give way to alpine meadows carpeted with edelweiss, gentians, and wild onions, creating spectacular scenery from May to September.
For European visitors based in Almaty, the park provides endless options for day hikes and weekend excursions at all difficulty levels. The combination of genuine mountain wilderness, diverse flora and fauna (including ibex, bears, and lynx), and proximity to urban amenities makes Ile-Alatau National Park an essential part of any Almaty itinerary.
