Otrar was once a thriving metropolis of over 200,000 people at the crossroads of the Silk Road. It was famous as the birthplace of the philosopher Al-Farabi, known as "the Second Teacher" after Aristotle.
Today, the Otrar archaeological site offers a haunting glimpse into this lost civilization. Excavations have uncovered city walls, workshops, and one of the oldest mosques in Central Asia.
