Turkestan is one of the most significant historical cities along the Silk Road. For centuries, it served as a political, cultural, and spiritual center of the Turkic-speaking peoples. The city's crowning jewel is the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, commissioned by Timur (Tamerlane) in the 14th century and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The massive unfinished structure features stunning turquoise-tiled domes and intricate geometric patterns that rival the finest examples of Islamic architecture in Samarkand or Isfahan. Surrounding the mausoleum is the ancient settlement of Yasi, where archaeological excavations have revealed layers of history dating back over 2,000 years.

The modern Turkestan has been extensively renovated, with a new international airport, the Caravanserai cultural center, and beautifully restored historic quarters.
